DETAILS AND CARE
Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) – 4–5 Inch Pot
Available in Jupiter, FL. at Urban Abundance.
Delicate in looks but tough as roots—Yarrow is a medicinal powerhouse and pollinator magnet that belongs in every South Florida garden. Known for its feathery foliage and long-lasting blooms, yarrow adds texture, beauty, and function to edible landscapes. It’s part of the Asteraceae family and is a perennial flowering herb, meaning it comes back season after season when cared for properly.
Sold in a 4–5 inch pot, yarrow thrives in raised beds, borders, or pollinator zones, especially during South Florida’s drier, cooler months.
Sunlight Needs: Full sun preferred—6+ hours ensures strong growth and continuous blooms.
Watering Needs: Low once established. Drought-tolerant but appreciates regular water during early growth.
Soil Requirements: Well-draining soil is a must. Tolerates poor soils and sandy beds as long as drainage is solid. Ideal pH: 6.0–7.5.
Growth Habit: Upright, fern-like foliage with clusters of flat-topped blooms. Grows 18–30 inches tall and spreads over time.
Bloom Timing: Blooms appear within 60–90 days after transplant and last through cool months.
Cold Tolerance: Strong. Performs best October through April in South Florida.
Special Features:
-
Attracts bees, butterflies, and beneficial predatory insects
-
Used traditionally in herbal teas, salves, and tinctures
-
Low maintenance and deer-resistant
-
Great as a companion plant for pest control and biodiversity
South Florida Notes: Yarrow is ideal for our winter season and thrives with minimal care once established. Cut back blooms to encourage reblooming and stronger root development. Avoid overwatering or heavy soil—yarrow likes to breathe.
Next steps after purchase:
-
Transplant into a sunny, well-drained spot
-
Space 12–18 inches apart to allow airflow
-
Water regularly during establishment, then reduce
-
Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continued flowering
-
Let flower heads go to seed for natural spread or herbal use
This is a perennial flowering herb—meaning it returns year after year in South Florida gardens and can even spread through reseeding.
