DETAILS AND CARE

Yarey Palm – Copernicia hospita (200 Gallon Pot)
Rare, resilient, and undeniably architectural, the Yarey Palm (Copernicia hospita) is a collector’s dream and a statement-maker in South Florida landscapes. With its bold, circular blue-silver fan leaves and slow, symmetrical growth, this palm brings sculptural elegance to any setting. Our 200-gallon specimen is landscape-ready and ideal for prominent placement in gardens, estates, or public plantings.

Native to Cuba and adapted to tropical and subtropical regions, the Yarey Palm belongs to the Arecaceae family and the Monocotyledonae class. It is a true fan palm with a solitary, upright trunk and dense crown of waxy, rounded fronds that give it a striking presence in full sun locations.

Its beauty is matched by its toughness—making it an excellent choice for xeriscapes, low-maintenance gardens, and landscapes exposed to heat, sun, and wind.

Key Features:

  • Botanical Name: Copernicia hospita

  • Common Name: Yarey Palm

  • Family: Arecaceae

  • Class: Monocotyledonae

  • Pot Size: 200 Gallon

  • Mature Height: 20–30 feet

  • Spread: 10–15 feet

  • USDA Zones: 10a–11

  • Leaf Type: Costapalmate (fan-shaped), silvery-blue, circular

  • Growth Habit: Solitary, slow-growing, upright

Sunlight Needs:

Thrives in full sun. The Yarey Palm develops its most compact shape and bold coloration when grown in open, sunny locations. Ideal for large South Florida landscapes with ample sky exposure.

Watering Requirements:

Low to moderate water needs. Once established, this palm is highly drought-tolerant. Water deeply and regularly during the first year. Thereafter, occasional deep watering will sustain healthy growth during dry seasons.

Soil Preferences:

Prefers well-drained, sandy or rocky soils. Tolerates poor soil as long as drainage is adequate. Slightly alkaline to neutral pH is ideal. Perfectly suited for South Florida’s native soil conditions.

Fertilization:

Apply a slow-release palm fertilizer 2–3 times per year during the growing season (spring through early fall). Choose a blend that includes micronutrients like manganese and magnesium to support foliage health and avoid common palm deficiencies.

Pest & Disease Tips:

Extremely low-maintenance and largely pest-free. Occasional monitoring for scale or nutritional deficiency is recommended. Well-spaced planting and clean pruning help prevent fungal issues.

Maintenance & Pruning:

Minimal pruning required. The trunk naturally sheds older fronds as it matures, forming a clean, ringed appearance. Remove only dead or damaged leaves to maintain aesthetics.

Why It Works in South Florida:

  • Highly wind and drought-tolerant, ideal for coastal and inland properties

  • Silver-blue foliage adds rare color contrast in tropical plantings

  • Slow growth rate makes it suitable for upscale landscapes with long-term vision

  • Excellent in modern, Mediterranean, or xeriscape designs

  • Rare and highly sought-after—adds distinction to high-end designs
