DETAILS AND CARE

Sugar Apple Tree in 25-Gallon Pot available in Jupiter, FL

Exotic, creamy, and bursting with tropical flavor—the Sugar Apple Tree (Annona squamosa), also known as Sweetsop, Custard Apple, or Anón, is a must-have for fruit lovers in South Florida. Its fruit looks like a green pinecone but breaks open to reveal custard-smooth white flesh that tastes like vanilla, banana, and marshmallow. This 25-gallon size offers a strong, well-developed tree ready to fruit sooner with proper care and full sun exposure.

A favorite among collectors and Caribbean households, the Sugar Apple is easy to grow and delivers indulgent rewards season after season.

Care & Growing Info (Optimized for South Florida):

  • Sunlight: Requires full sun—at least 6–8 hours daily for flowering and fruit production.

  • Watering: Moderate. Keep soil evenly moist during flowering and fruit set, but allow slight drying between waterings. Drought-tolerant once established.

  • Soil: Well-drained sandy or loamy soil with neutral to slightly acidic pH. Avoid wet or clay-heavy spots.

  • Fertilizer: Feed 3–4 times per year with a balanced fruit tree fertilizer (low nitrogen once mature to encourage fruiting). Add calcium and magnesium to support fruit development.

  • Growth Habit: Small, deciduous tree with open branching and light green foliage. In a 25-gallon pot, expect 5–7 feet tall; in-ground, it can grow up to 15–20 feet.

  • Temperature: Best suited for USDA Zones 10–11. Sensitive to cold; protect if temps drop below 35°F.

  • Maintenance: Moderate. Prune lightly after harvest to control size and shape. Hand-pollination may improve fruit set in still or low-pollinator areas.

Fruit Notes:
Produces round to heart-shaped green fruit with bumpy skin. When ripe, the fruit softens and splits to reveal creamy, sweet white pulp surrounding black seeds. Harvest typically occurs in late summer to fall. Best eaten fresh with a spoon or used in smoothies and desserts.
