DETAILS AND CARE

Strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa) – 4–5 Inch Pot
Available in Jupiter, FL. at Urban Abundance.

Sweet, sun-kissed, and perfectly pluckable—Strawberries bring pure joy to South Florida gardens with their juicy fruit, charming foliage, and irresistible appeal to kids, pollinators, and home chefs alike. A member of the Rosaceae family, strawberries are cool-season perennial fruiting plants, grown as annuals in South Florida due to our unique subtropical climate.

Sold in a 4–5 inch pot, these compact plants are perfect for raised beds, hanging baskets, vertical gardens, or sunny patio containers.

Sunlight Needs: Full sun—6–8 hours per day is ideal for flowering and fruiting.
Watering Needs: Moderate and consistent. Keep soil moist but not soggy; avoid wetting leaves.
Soil Requirements: Rich, loamy, well-drained soil with compost. Slightly acidic pH (5.5–6.5) preferred.
Growth Habit: Low-growing with trailing runners. Forms a dense mat over time.
Fruit Timing: In South Florida, strawberries produce from late November through March.
Heat Tolerance: Prefers cool-to-warm temps. Sensitive to excessive heat and high humidity.
Special Features:

  • Sweet, red fruit great for fresh eating, jams, desserts

  • Attractive flowers and foliage for ornamental use

  • Compact and excellent for small spaces

  • Loved by bees and beneficial insects

South Florida Notes: Best planted between October and December for optimal harvests by spring. Protect from heavy summer rains and intense heat—treat as an annual for best results. Watch for birds, slugs, and ants during fruiting.

Next steps after purchase:

  • Transplant into fertile, well-drained soil in full sun

  • Mulch with straw or pine needles to keep fruit off soil and reduce weeds

  • Water consistently, especially during fruiting

  • Fertilize every 2–3 weeks with an organic bloom booster

  • Snip runners if you want bigger fruit; allow runners for spreading

This is a cool-season perennial fruiting plant—perennial in nature, but treated as an annual in South Florida due to climate sensitivity.
