DETAILS AND CARE
Sapodilla Tree (Manilkara zapota) – 3 Gallon Pot
Available in Jupiter, FL.
If you’ve never tasted fresh Sapodilla, you’re in for a treat. This tropical treasure—also known as Manilkara zapota or “Nispero”—produces sweet, brown-skinned fruits with a texture like pear and a flavor often compared to brown sugar or caramel. Native to Central America, Sapodilla belongs to the Sapotaceae family and is classified as a fruiting evergreen tropical tree, prized for both its delicious harvest and handsome form.
This 3-gallon tree is ready to settle into your garden or orchard space. It’s slow-growing, sturdy, and highly adaptable to South Florida’s climate—making it an ideal long-term addition for edible landscapes.
Sunlight Needs: Full sun is essential. Provide 6–8 hours of direct light daily to promote healthy foliage and fruit production.
Watering Needs: Moderate. Water deeply and regularly while young; reduce frequency once established. Sapodilla is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional irrigation during dry spells.
Soil Requirements: Prefers well-drained sandy or loamy soils. Tolerates slightly alkaline conditions and performs well in coastal soils with good drainage.
Growth Habit: Upright with dense, rounded canopy. Can grow up to 30–40 feet tall, though it responds well to pruning and shaping.
Cold Tolerance: Hardy in USDA zones 10–11. Protect young trees from frost; mature trees can handle brief cold snaps.
Fruit Season: Typically fruits in late spring through early summer, with potential for multiple crops depending on care.
Special Features:
-
Low-maintenance and long-lived
-
Tolerant of wind and salt exposure—great for coastal gardens
-
Fruit stores well on the tree without splitting
-
Glossy evergreen leaves provide year-round interest
South Florida Notes: Sapodilla performs exceptionally well in South Florida’s sandy soils and hot, humid conditions. It’s ideal for low-maintenance food forests, backyard orchards, and even large containers while young. Because of its slow growth, it’s easy to shape and maintain over time.
Next steps after purchase:
-
Plant in a sunny, well-drained location or large container
-
Water 2–3 times weekly during the first year
-
Fertilize with a balanced, slow-release tropical fruit tree mix
-
Mulch lightly to conserve moisture and suppress weeds
-
Be patient—fruiting may begin in 2–3 years with proper care
This is a fruiting evergreen tropical tree—meaning it keeps its leaves year-round and produces edible fruit annually when mature.
