DETAILS AND CARE
Rollinia (Rollinia deliciosa) – 3-Gallon Pot
Available in Jupiter, FL. at Urban Abundance.
Rare, tropical, and totally otherworldly—Rollinia, also known as Biriba or Amazon Custard Apple, is a fast-growing fruit tree that produces large, spiky yellow fruits with a custard-soft, lemon-vanilla flavored pulp. A true conversation-starter and edible treasure. A member of the Annonaceae family, Rollinia is a tropical deciduous fruit tree, ideal for warm, humid climates like South Florida’s.
Sold in a 3-gallon pot, this young tree is ready to be transplanted and take off in nutrient-rich soil with plenty of sun.
Sunlight Needs: Full sun—6 to 8+ hours daily. Needs high light for fruit production.
Watering Needs: Moderate to high. Likes consistent moisture but never soggy roots. Mulch to help retain soil moisture.
Soil Requirements: Rich, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5–7.0) preferred.
Growth Habit: Upright and fast-growing; can reach 15–30 feet in South Florida conditions.
Fruit Timing: Typically fruits within 3–4 years of planting. Ripens in summer to early fall.
Heat Tolerance: Excellent. Does best with humidity and warmth year-round.
Cold Tolerance: Very low. Sensitive to frost—young trees should be protected in rare cold snaps.
Special Features:
-
Produces unique, soft, custard-like fruit with lemon-pie flavor
-
Rare and exotic, prized by fruit collectors
-
Fast-growing and highly rewarding with good care
-
Deciduous in winter—loses leaves but quickly rebounds
South Florida Notes: Plant in a wind-protected area with full sun. Rollinia is shallow-rooted and appreciates a thick mulch layer. Needs good drainage but steady moisture. Prune lightly to shape during dormancy and support early growth.
Next steps after purchase:
-
Transplant into full sun in a rich, well-draining spot
-
Water 2–3x per week until established, then monitor based on weather
-
Mulch 2–3 inches deep, keeping mulch a few inches away from the trunk
-
Fertilize monthly during growing season with a tropical fruit mix
-
Protect from frost during the first 2–3 winters
-
Stake if needed to support upright growth in windy spots
This is a tropical deciduous fruit tree—meaning it loses its leaves seasonally but regrows quickly and will produce fruit year after year with proper care.
