DETAILS AND CARE

Peruvian Cactus – 25 Gallon Pot available in Jupiter, FL.

The Peruvian Cactus (Echinopsis peruviana), also known as the Peruvian Torch Cactus, is a fast-growing, columnar cactus known for its striking blue-green stems, prominent ribs, and sharp spines. This bold, architectural cactus is ideal for tropical and subtropical landscapes, thriving in the warm, sunny environment of South Florida. Native to the Andes Mountains of Peru, it adapts beautifully to local conditions and makes a dramatic statement whether grown in a pot or planted in the ground.

Belonging to the Cactaceae family and classified in the Magnoliopsida plant class, this cactus is both resilient and ornamental. Its upright growth habit, along with occasional fragrant white flowers that bloom at night, makes it a standout choice for xeriscaping and modern garden designs.

Key Features:

  • Botanical Name: Echinopsis peruviana

  • Common Name: Peruvian Torch Cactus

  • Family: Cactaceae

  • Class: Magnoliopsida

  • Pot Size: 25 Gallon

  • Mature Height: 6–15 feet

  • Spread: 2–4 feet

  • USDA Zones: 9b–11

  • Growth Habit: Columnar, branching at the base

  • Texture: Ribbed, spiny, blue-green stems

Sunlight Needs:
Thrives in full sun. Plant in a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Sun exposure intensifies the cactus’s color and promotes strong vertical growth.

Watering Requirements:
Extremely drought-tolerant once established. Water thoroughly but infrequently. Allow the soil to completely dry out between waterings. Overwatering or poorly draining soil can cause root rot, especially in South Florida’s humid climate.

Soil Preferences:
Prefers well-draining, sandy or rocky soil. Use a cactus or succulent potting mix for container growth. When planting in-ground, amend native soil with sand or perlite to ensure proper drainage.

Fertilization:
Feed sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a low-nitrogen, cactus-specific fertilizer to encourage healthy growth. Do not fertilize during the winter dormancy period.

Pest & Disease Resistance:
Generally resistant to pests and diseases, but may occasionally attract scale insects or spider mites. Treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if needed.

Why It’s Great for South Florida:

  • Tolerates heat, drought, and poor soils

  • Low-maintenance and suitable for xeriscaping

  • Adds vertical interest and architectural form

  • Ideal for containers, rock gardens, and dry borders

  • Night-blooming flowers provide added seasonal interest
