DETAILS AND CARE

Pencil Cactus in 25-Gallon Pot available in Jupiter, FL.

Bold, modern, and delightfully low-maintenance—the Pencil Cactus (Euphorbia tirucalli), also known as "Firesticks" or "Sticks on Fire," is a sculptural showstopper in any South Florida landscape. In a 25-gallon pot, this mature, upright specimen makes an instant impact with its coral-like branches and ever-changing hues that range from green to blazing orange, especially in cooler months or full sun.

Native to arid regions but perfectly suited to our tropical lifestyle, the Pencil Cactus is ideal for patios, xeriscapes, modern gardens, and striking container designs that call for drama without the fuss.

Care & Growing Info (Optimized for South Florida):

  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun for the most vibrant color. In South Florida, it loves bright light and heat—perfect for open patios, rooftops, or exposed garden beds.

  • Watering: Extremely drought-tolerant. Water deeply but infrequently—allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is the #1 issue to avoid.

  • Soil: Requires fast-draining soil. In containers, use a cactus or succulent mix. For South Florida’s sandy conditions, ensure containers have excellent drainage to avoid root rot.

  • Fertilizer: Feed sparingly—once in spring with a diluted succulent fertilizer is plenty. Too much fertilizer can reduce its color intensity and compact form.

  • Growth Habit: Upright, branching, and bushy. In a 25-gallon pot, Pencil Cactus can grow 5–8 feet tall with a sculptural silhouette that adds height and texture without crowding the space.

  • Temperature: Loves South Florida’s heat and humidity. Hardy in USDA Zones 10–11. Can tolerate brief cool spells but should be protected from frost.

  • Maintenance: Nearly none. Prune for shape if desired, but always wear gloves—this plant exudes a milky sap that is toxic and irritating to skin and eyes. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
