Description:
This premium papaya plant is fruit-forward and ready to thrive in South Florida’s sun-soaked climate. At home in a 3-gallon pot, it’s ideal for raised beds, large containers, or direct planting into fertile ground. With proper care, your papaya will mature rapidly and begin fruiting in as little as 6–12 months.

Our Green Thumbs have selected papayas that flourish in high heat and humidity, making them a stellar choice for Urban Abundance gardens. Expect lush green leaves, striking vertical growth, and sweet, melon-like fruit with a buttery texture and rich tropical flavor.

Care Tips for Success in South Florida:

  • Sun: Papayas crave sunlight! Place in full sun (6–8+ hours daily) for the best growth and sweetest fruit. Morning sun is best to dry off dew and reduce fungal risk.

  • Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist—especially during the dry season—but avoid waterlogging. Deep waterings 2–3 times per week are ideal for young plants.

  • Soil: Papayas love loamy, nutrient-rich soil. Mix compost or worm castings into the bed or potting mix. Ensure excellent drainage to avoid root rot.

  • Spacing: If planting in the ground, allow 6–8 feet of space around the tree for airflow and fruit access.

  • Feeding: Monthly feeding with an organic, balanced fertilizer or compost tea keeps your tree lush and productive.

  • Harvesting: Fruit is typically ready when it begins turning from green to golden-yellow. Papayas ripen off the tree, so pick when color change begins.

Why You'll Love It:

  • Fresh, homegrown tropical fruit in your own yard

  • Fast-growing and low-maintenance

  • Pollinator-friendly (especially if you let it flower!)

  • Excellent for edible landscapes and lush focal points
