DETAILS AND CARE

Papaya Tree – Carica papaya (15 Gallon Pot) available in Jupiter, FL.

Bring the tropics home with a fast-growing, fruit-bearing Papaya Tree—perfectly suited for South Florida’s climate. This 15-gallon specimen is mature enough to begin producing within the first growing season, offering sweet, nutrient-rich fruit with minimal effort. Whether planted in-ground or grown in a large container, this tropical favorite brings both bold foliage and abundant harvests to your edible landscape.

Papaya (Carica papaya) belongs to the Caricaceae family and the Dicotyledonae class. Originally from Central America, papayas are now a staple in subtropical gardens across the world. In South Florida, their heat-loving, sun-seeking nature makes them one of the easiest tropical fruit trees to grow at home.

Key Features:

  • Botanical Name: Carica papaya

  • Common Name: Papaya Tree

  • Family: Caricaceae

  • Class: Dicotyledonae

  • Pot Size: 15 Gallon

  • Mature Height: 10–15 feet (can be pruned shorter)

  • Spread: 6–8 feet

  • USDA Zones: 9b–11

  • Fruit Season: Spring through fall (sometimes year-round)

  • Fruit Type: Large, oval, orange-fleshed with sweet flavor

Sunlight Needs:
Papayas require full sun for optimal growth and fruiting. Place in a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sun daily. Coastal and inland areas of South Florida are both ideal.

Watering:
Water deeply 1–2 times per week. Allow the top few inches of soil to dry slightly between waterings to avoid root rot. Papayas prefer evenly moist soil but do not tolerate standing water.

Soil Requirements:
Grow in rich, well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.5. In South Florida’s sandy soils, amend with compost or organic matter to improve nutrient content and water retention. Raised beds or mounds are ideal in low-lying areas.

Fertilization:
Feed monthly with a balanced fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) that includes micronutrients like magnesium and calcium. Organic compost, worm castings, or seaweed-based fertilizers also promote strong, steady growth.

Pest & Disease Tips:
Common issues include whiteflies, aphids, and root rot in soggy conditions. Practice good spacing for airflow, avoid overhead watering, and treat pests with insecticidal soap or neem oil as needed.

Maintenance & Pruning:
Minimal pruning is needed. Remove lower leaves as they yellow and thin out suckers at the base if growing a single-trunk form. Papayas are short-lived but highly productive trees—replace every 3–4 years for best results.

Special Notes for South Florida Gardeners:

  • Self-pollinating varieties are ideal, but some types benefit from multiple plants for cross-pollination.

  • Sensitive to cold—protect during temperatures below 40°F.

  • Fast fruiting—often within 6–12 months of planting.

  • Ideal for tropical gardens, food forests, and raised bed orchards.
