DETAILS AND CARE

Mustard Greens (Brassica juncea) – 4–5 Inch Pot
Available in Jupiter, FL. at Urban Abundance.

Spicy, fast-growing, and full of flavor—Mustard Greens bring a zesty kick to any cool-season garden. With bold, frilly leaves and a peppery bite, they’re a Southern kitchen staple and an easy win for fall-to-spring planting in South Florida. These greens belong to the Brassicaceae family and are a cool-season annual leafy vegetable that thrives in our mild, dry season.

Sold in a 4–5 inch pot, this vigorous variety is ready to pop into raised beds, edible borders, or containers—and rewards you with continuous harvests when picked regularly.

Sunlight Needs: Full sun to partial shade. At least 4–6 hours per day supports tender, flavorful growth.
Watering Needs: Moderate. Keep soil evenly moist to prevent bitterness and bolting.
Soil Requirements: Loose, fertile soil rich in compost. Slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0).
Growth Habit: Upright and leafy, forming loose rosettes. Typically reaches 12–18 inches tall.
Harvest Timing: Begin harvesting baby leaves 20–30 days after transplanting. Full-size leaves ready in 40–50 days.
Cold Tolerance: Excellent. Thrives in South Florida’s October through March growing season.
Special Features:

  • Packed with antioxidants and vitamins A, C, and K

  • Spicy when raw, mellow when cooked

  • Naturally deters some pests and improves soil health

  • Can be harvested continuously for weeks

South Florida Notes: Mustard greens love the cool season and are one of the fastest-growing greens in our region. To extend your harvest, pick leaves frequently and protect young plants from flea beetles with row cover or neem oil. They’re also great companion plants for other brassicas.

Next steps after purchase:

  • Transplant into full sun or part shade in rich, well-drained soil

  • Space 8–12 inches apart

  • Water regularly and mulch to hold moisture

  • Harvest outer leaves often to keep plants producing

  • Re-seed or succession plant every few weeks for ongoing harvests

This is a cool-season annual—meaning it completes its cycle in one season and can be replanted each fall and winter.
