DETAILS AND CARE
Marigolds (4” or 6" Starter Pot)
Available in Jupiter, FL. at Urban Abundance.
Bright, cheerful, and fiercely functional—Marigolds are the ultimate garden MVP. These vibrant bloomers belong to the Asteraceae family (also known as the daisy family) and are classified as ornamental flowering annuals. In South Florida gardens, they’re not just pretty—they’re powerfully protective, too.
Marigolds thrive in full sun and prefer well-drained, moderately fertile soil. They’re low-maintenance, heat-tolerant, and fast-growing—perfect for borders, raised beds, or interplanted with veggies as natural pest repellents. Their scent and root compounds help deter nematodes, aphids, whiteflies, and even rabbits.
In South Florida’s climate, marigolds can bloom nearly year-round but are most vibrant in the cooler months. Expect blooms within 45–60 days of planting. Deadheading (removing spent flowers) will keep the blooms coming. While not fussy, they don’t like soggy soil—make sure their roots get a chance to dry out between waterings.
Pest control bonus: Marigolds are like bouncers for your garden. They’re known to repel common pests, and planting them near tomatoes, beans, or brassicas can reduce insect pressure naturally.
Next steps after purchase:
-
Transplant into a sunny spot with good drainage within 3–5 days
-
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry
-
Pinch off faded blooms to encourage continuous flowering
-
Plant near edible crops as a living layer of natural pest control
This is an annual plant—meaning it completes its life cycle in one growing season and will need to be replanted for future blooms.
