DETAILS AND CARE

Marcus Pumpkin Avocado Tree – Persea americana 'Marcus Pumpkin' (15 Gallon Pot) available in Jupiter, FL.
Introduce a premium cultivar to your edible landscape with the Marcus Pumpkin Avocado Tree, a rare and highly desirable variety of Persea americana. Grown in a 15-gallon pot and ready for planting, this West Indian-type avocado is beloved for its large, round-to-oval fruit with creamy, rich flesh and excellent flavor. Ideal for South Florida’s tropical and subtropical climate, the Marcus Pumpkin thrives in full sun, warm soil, and well-drained conditions.

This cultivar is a vigorous grower and reliable producer, known to yield hefty fruit up to 2–4 pounds each. A standout in both flavor and productivity, it’s an excellent choice for home growers, food forests, and edible landscaping enthusiasts looking to cultivate a large, early-season avocado harvest.

Key Features:

  • Botanical Name: Persea americana 'Marcus Pumpkin'

  • Family: Lauraceae

  • Class: Dicotyledonae

  • Pot Size: 15 Gallon

  • Growth Habit: Upright, spreading canopy

  • Mature Height: 25–40 feet (can be pruned to maintain size)

  • USDA Zones: 9b–11 (excellent for South Florida)

  • Fruit Season: Typically June through August

  • Fruit Size: Large, 2–4 pounds

  • Flesh: Creamy, low oil, smooth texture

  • Skin: Green when ripe, smooth to lightly textured

Sunlight Needs:
Requires full sun—at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily. Choose a planting site with unobstructed exposure for best results.

Watering:
Water deeply but infrequently. Young trees need consistent watering to establish a strong root system (1–2 times weekly). Once mature, Marcus Pumpkin trees are moderately drought-tolerant but benefit from occasional deep irrigation during dry months. Avoid waterlogged soil.

Soil Requirements:
Prefers well-draining sandy or loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). Avoid compacted or poorly draining sites. For heavy soils, consider planting on a mound or in raised beds.

Fertilization:
Feed with a balanced, slow-release organic fertilizer 3–4 times per year. Young trees benefit from nitrogen-rich blends to support vegetative growth, while mature trees need added potassium for strong fruit development.

Pest & Disease Tips:
Generally pest-resistant but monitor for avocado lace bug, scale, and mites. Use horticultural oils or beneficial insects as organic controls. Root rot from poor drainage is the most common issue—avoid overwatering and ensure proper site selection.

Planting Tips:
Transplant in spring or fall for best establishment. Space at least 15–20 feet from buildings or other trees. Stake young trees in windy areas. Mulch with 2–3 inches of composted mulch, keeping it clear of the trunk to avoid fungal issues.

Special Notes for South Florida Gardeners:

  • Marcus Pumpkin is a West Indian-type avocado, making it more heat and humidity tolerant than Mexican or Guatemalan varieties.

  • Cold-sensitive below 30°F—protect young trees during rare cold snaps.

  • Early fruiting season (summer) makes it an excellent pair with later-season avocado varieties for year-round harvest potential.

  • Ideal for permaculture gardens, large containers, or orchard-style plantings.
