DETAILS AND CARE

Kumquat ‘Meiwa’ Tree in 7-Gallon Pot available in Jupiter, FL.

Compact, cheerful, and bursting with citrusy sweetness—the Kumquat ‘Meiwa’ Tree (Fortunella crassifolia) in a 7-gallon pot is the ultimate patio fruit tree for South Florida gardens. Unlike tart kumquats, Meiwa kumquats are prized for their sweet, edible rind and low-acid flesh, making them perfect for eating fresh right off the tree—skin and all!

This 7-gallon tree is well-branched and ready to thrive in containers or the ground, offering year-round beauty, fragrant blossoms, and small but mighty citrus fruit.

Care & Growing Info (Optimized for South Florida):

  • Sunlight: Requires full sun—at least 6–8 hours daily for healthy growth and prolific fruiting.

  • Watering: Water consistently, allowing the top inch of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogged conditions.

  • Soil: Thrives in well-drained, sandy or loamy soil. Enrich with compost or citrus-specific amendments for better structure and nutrient retention.

  • Fertilizer: Feed with a citrus fertilizer every 6–8 weeks from spring through early fall. Include micronutrients like magnesium and iron for vibrant leaves and fruit.

  • Growth Habit: Naturally compact and rounded with glossy evergreen foliage. In a 7-gallon pot, expect the tree to be 2–3 feet tall, with potential to reach 6–10 feet when planted in the ground.

  • Temperature: Best for USDA Zones 9–11. One of the most cold-tolerant citrus varieties, and well-suited to South Florida’s warm winters.

  • Maintenance: Low. Prune lightly after fruiting to shape and encourage branching. Watch for common citrus pests—treat organically as needed.

Fruit Notes: Produces small, round, golden-orange fruits with sweet rind and mildly tart interior. Ripens in late fall through winter, making it a cheerful cool-season treat.
