DETAILS AND CARE

Jalapeño Pepper (Capsicum annuum) – 4–5 Inch Pot
Available in Jupiter, FL. at Urban Abundance.

A garden classic with just the right amount of heat—Jalapeño Peppers are a must-have for spicy food lovers. These medium-heat peppers are great for salsa, stuffing, grilling, or pickling. As part of the Solanaceae family, Jalapeños are a warm-season fruiting annual vegetable that performs beautifully in South Florida’s cooler, dry season.

Grown in 4–5 inch pots, these young plants are compact, productive, and eager to thrive in containers, raised beds, or full garden plots.

Sunlight Needs: Full sun—6–8 hours daily promotes strong growth and consistent fruiting.
Watering Needs: Moderate. Keep soil evenly moist, especially when flowering and fruiting. Avoid wet leaves to reduce disease pressure.
Soil Requirements: Well-drained, fertile soil with compost added. Prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0).
Growth Habit: Compact and bushy. Reaches about 18–24 inches tall—great for container growing or tight garden beds.
Fruit Timing: Produces in about 60–75 days after transplant. Harvest green for classic heat, or let ripen to red for sweeter, deeper flavor.
Cold Tolerance: Not frost-tolerant. Best grown from fall through early spring in South Florida.
Special Features:

  • Classic medium-heat pepper (2,500–8,000 Scoville units)

  • High-yielding with regular harvesting

  • Easy to grow and manage in small spaces

  • Great for pickling, roasting, and fresh use

South Florida Notes: Jalapeños love our cooler months—less humidity means less disease. Plant in October for maximum yields by winter and early spring. Great companion to other solanaceous crops like tomatoes and eggplants.

Next steps after purchase:

  • Transplant into full sun with rich, well-drained soil

  • Fertilize every 3–4 weeks with a vegetable-safe fertilizer

  • Mulch lightly to conserve moisture and reduce weed pressure

  • Harvest often to promote continuous production

  • Monitor for aphids or caterpillars—treat early with neem oil if needed

This is a warm-season fruiting annual—meaning it completes its full life cycle in one season and will need to be replanted for future harvests.
