DETAILS AND CARE

Indian Spurge Cactus – 25 Gallon Pot available in Jupiter, FL.

The Indian Spurge Cactus (Euphorbia antiquorum) is a bold, low-maintenance succulent shrub or small tree that adds a striking, sculptural look to South Florida landscapes. Known for its thick, triangular green stems with prominent ridges and occasional branching arms, this cactus-like euphorbia is both drought-resistant and highly ornamental. Native to India and Southeast Asia, it thrives in hot, sunny climates and performs exceptionally well in containers or directly in the ground.

This plant belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family and is classified under Magnoliopsida, making it a distant cousin to more traditional cacti while sharing similar growth habits. Each 25-gallon specimen is robust, established, and ready to make an instant impact in tropical or xeriscape gardens.

Key Features:

  • Botanical Name: Euphorbia antiquorum

  • Common Name: Indian Spurge Cactus

  • Family: Euphorbiaceae

  • Class: Magnoliopsida

  • Pot Size: 25 Gallon

  • Mature Height: 6–15 feet

  • Spread: 4–8 feet

  • USDA Zones: 9b–11

  • Growth Habit: Upright, columnar with arms

  • Texture: Architectural, with segmented ridges and occasional thorns

Sunlight Needs:
Requires full sun to partial shade. For optimal performance, plant in an area with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. Strong sun exposure enhances its structure and promotes vigorous growth.

Watering Requirements:
Very low water needs. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to fully dry between waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot, especially in humid climates like South Florida. Once established, it can thrive solely on rainfall.

Soil Preferences:
Grows best in sandy, well-draining soil. Use a cactus or succulent soil mix for container growth. Avoid clay or compacted soils that retain moisture. Raised beds and slopes are ideal for landscape planting.

Fertilization:
Apply a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer during spring or early summer for a light feeding. Avoid excessive fertilizing, which can cause leggy growth.

Pest & Disease Resistance:
Naturally resistant to pests and diseases. Occasionally may attract scale insects or mealybugs, which are easily controlled with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Caution:
Produces a milky latex sap that is toxic and irritating to skin and eyes. Always handle with care and wear gloves when pruning or repotting. Keep out of reach of pets and children.

Why It’s Great for South Florida:

  • Thrives in hot, dry, and sunny conditions

  • Perfect for xeriscaping and modern landscape designs

  • Low maintenance and drought tolerant

  • Can be grown in large containers or in-ground

  • Adds height, drama, and structure to any garden
