DETAILS AND CARE

Grumichama Tree in 7-Gallon Pot Available in Jupiter, FL

The Grumichama (Eugenia brasiliensis), also known as Brazilian Cherry or Sour Cherry of Rio, is a rare tropical fruit tree prized for its deep purple-black fruit that looks like a cherry but tastes like a juicy blend of grape and black cherry. Native to Brazil and beautifully adapted to South Florida, this small, ornamental tree produces fragrant white flowers followed by flavorful fruits in early summer.

In a 7-gallon pot, this Grumichama tree is well-established and ready to thrive in your home orchard, edible hedge, or patio garden.

Care & Growing Info (Optimized for South Florida):

Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade. 6+ hours of light daily for best flowering and fruit set.

Watering: Moderate to high. Likes consistent moisture, especially when young or in containers. Mulch helps retain soil moisture.

Soil: Prefers rich, well-draining soil with organic matter. Tolerates slightly acidic to neutral pH.

Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced fruit tree fertilizer 2–3 times a year. Supplement with iron or sulfur if leaves yellow in alkaline soils.

Growth Habit: Compact and slow-growing. Typically reaches 10–15 feet tall. Can be pruned into a small tree or large shrub. 7-gallon trees are typically 3–5 feet tall.

Temperature: USDA Zones 9b–11. Tolerates brief dips to around 28°F. Well-suited to coastal South Florida and protected inland gardens.

Maintenance: Low. Prune after harvest to shape or maintain as a hedge. Minimal pest or disease pressure when grown in healthy soil.

Harvest & Seasonality:

Planting Time: Spring and fall preferred, but year-round planting is possible in South Florida with proper irrigation.

Harvest Time: Late spring to early summer (May–June), often ripening within weeks of flowering.

How to Harvest: Gently pick when fruit turns dark purple and soft to the touch. Eaten fresh or used in jams, jellies, and baked goods.

Seasonal Notes: One of the few tropical fruits with a “true cherry” look and texture. Great for gardens with limited space.

Medicinal & Nutritional Benefits:

Grumichama fruits are high in anthocyanins (potent antioxidants), Vitamin C, and fiber. They support immune health, reduce inflammation, and contribute to healthy skin and digestion. Their low sugar and high antioxidant profile make them a guilt-free treat.
