DETAILS AND CARE
Dino Kale (Brassica oleracea) – 4–5 Inch Pot
Available in Jupiter, FL. at Urban Abundance.
Deep green, dimpled, and full of flavor—Dino Kale is a superstar in both the kitchen and the garden. Also known as Lacinato or Tuscan kale, this heirloom variety is loved for its slightly sweet, earthy flavor and tender texture. It belongs to the Brassicaceae family and is considered a cool-season leafy green biennial (grown as an annual) in South Florida.
Our 4–5 inch potted plants are perfect for transplanting into raised beds, containers, or edible landscapes. With regular harvesting, you’ll enjoy a steady supply of nutritious greens for months.
Sunlight Needs: Full sun to partial shade. At least 4–6 hours daily is ideal for best leaf production.
Watering Needs: Moderate. Keep soil evenly moist, especially during early growth and dry spells.
Soil Requirements: Rich, well-drained soil high in organic matter. Ideal pH: 6.2–6.8.
Growth Habit: Upright rosette of deeply textured leaves. Grows 18–24 inches tall.
Harvest Timing: Begin harvesting individual leaves 30–40 days after transplant. Pick from the bottom up for continual growth.
Cold Tolerance: Excellent. Dino Kale thrives in South Florida’s fall and winter season and even improves in flavor with cooler nights.

South Florida Notes: Dino Kale is a strong performer in South Florida’s October–March window. Pest pressure is lower in cool months, but keep an eye out for cabbage worms or aphids—use BT spray or neem oil for organic control. It can tolerate some shade and actually appreciates a bit of afternoon protection as spring approaches.
Next steps after purchase:
-
Transplant into fertile, well-draining soil
-
Space 12–18 inches apart to allow airflow
-
Water consistently, especially in early weeks
-
Fertilize monthly with a leafy green organic blend
-
Harvest regularly and remove any yellowing leaves
This is a biennial grown as an annual—meaning it naturally lives two years but is cultivated for harvest in a single season in South Florida.
