DETAILS AND CARE

Dill (Anethum graveolens) – 4–5 Inch Pot
Available in Jupiter, FL. at Urban Abundance.

Feathery, fragrant, and full of old-world charm—Dill is a classic herb that brings soft texture and bright flavor to your garden. With its airy leaves and tall, umbrella-like blooms, dill is just as beloved for pickling and cooking as it is for attracting pollinators. A member of the Apiaceae family, Dill is a cool-season annual herb that thrives in South Florida’s dry, mild months.

Sold in a 4–5 inch pot, Dill is ideal for raised beds, borders, or containers where it can reach for the sky and perfume the breeze.

Sunlight Needs: Full sun—6 or more hours daily for tall, flavorful growth.
Watering Needs: Moderate. Keep soil moist but not soggy. Avoid overhead watering during flowering.
Soil Requirements: Well-draining, compost-rich soil. Ideal pH: 6.0–7.5.
Growth Habit: Upright herb with soft, thread-like foliage. Grows 2–3 feet tall.
Harvest Timing: Begin harvesting 3–4 weeks after transplanting. Pick leaves early and often for best flavor.
Cold Tolerance: Excellent for South Florida’s fall–spring window.
Special Features:

  • Aromatic leaves and seeds used in pickling, sauces, and teas

  • Attracts butterflies and beneficial insects

  • Easy to grow and self-seeds readily

  • Lovely companion for brassicas and leafy greens

South Florida Notes: Dill prefers cool weather and bolts quickly in heat. Plant from October through February. As it flowers, it draws in pollinators and beneficial insects like ladybugs and parasitic wasps. Save seeds to replant or use in the kitchen.

Next steps after purchase:

  • Transplant into full sun in fertile, well-drained soil

  • Space 8–10 inches apart

  • Water consistently during dry spells

  • Harvest leaves frequently to delay flowering

  • Allow some plants to flower and set seed for natural reseeding

This is a cool-season annual herb—meaning it completes its full life cycle in one season and is best grown fresh each fall and winter.
