DETAILS AND CARE

Colocasia in 3-Gallon Pot available in Jupiter, FL

Dramatic, lush, and full of tropical flair—Colocasia (Colocasia esculenta), commonly known as Elephant Ear, brings big, heart-shaped leaves and a bold presence to any South Florida garden. With its vibrant foliage and fast-growing habit, Colocasia makes an instant impact in beds, borders, or containers. This 3-gallon pot offers a healthy, vigorous start to a plant that thrives in our heat and humidity.

Perfect for creating that jungle-like vibe or adding lush volume to your edible landscape.

Care & Growing Info (Optimized for South Florida):

  • Sunlight: Full sun to part shade. Prefers morning sun and some afternoon protection in extreme heat.

  • Watering: High. Loves moisture—water frequently, especially in containers. Can even grow in boggy or water garden conditions.

  • Soil: Rich, loamy, and consistently moist soil with high organic content. Add compost or worm castings for best results.

  • Fertilizer: Feed every 3–4 weeks with a nitrogen-rich or balanced organic fertilizer for large, vibrant leaves.

  • Growth Habit: Upright clumping form with large, heart- or arrow-shaped leaves on long stems. Can grow 3–6 feet tall and wide, depending on variety and care.

  • Temperature: Loves USDA Zones 9–11. Thrives in South Florida’s tropical climate. Protect from frost or cold snaps.

  • Maintenance: Low to moderate. Remove spent leaves and provide consistent water for best results.

Foliage & Growth Notes:
Leaves can be green, black, or variegated depending on variety. The large size and bold texture make it a striking accent plant in tropical-themed beds or containers.

Medicinal & Nutritional Benefits:
Traditionally, the underground corms (tubers) of Colocasia esculenta are used in tropical cuisines (like taro). When cooked properly, they are rich in fiber, potassium, and Vitamin C. Note: Raw parts of the plant are toxic due to calcium oxalate crystals and must be cooked thoroughly to be edible.

  • Moist or boggy planting zones

  • Large decorative containers

  • Pollinator and wildlife-friendly beds

  • Edible landscapes (with proper preparation)
