DETAILS AND CARE

Collard Greens (Brassica oleracea var. viridis) – 4–5 Inch Pot
Available in Jupiter, FL. at Urban Abundance.

Big, bold, and deeply southern—Collard Greens are a winter garden essential in South Florida. Known for their broad, sturdy leaves and rich, earthy flavor, collards thrive in our cool-season beds with minimal fuss. Part of the Brassicaceae family, collards are a cool-season biennial (grown as an annual) leafy vegetable that delivers steady harvests from fall through spring.

Sold in a 4–5 inch pot, these starter plants are ideal for raised beds or large containers and respond well to continuous harvesting.

Sunlight Needs: Full sun preferred—6+ hours a day yields stronger plants and fuller leaves.
Watering Needs: Moderate. Keep soil consistently moist, especially during early growth and dry spells.
Soil Requirements: Rich, well-draining soil with compost mixed in. Slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0).
Growth Habit: Upright rosette with broad, flat leaves. Reaches 18–36 inches tall.
Harvest Timing: Begin harvesting outer leaves 30–45 days after transplant. Harvest continually for extended yields.
Cold Tolerance: Excellent. Tolerates light frost, which actually sweetens the leaves. Ideal October–March crop.
Special Features:

  • Exceptionally nutrient-dense: high in fiber, vitamins A, C, and K

  • Long harvesting window with proper care

  • Can be harvested leaf-by-leaf or as a full plant

  • Performs beautifully in containers and raised beds

South Florida Notes: Collards are one of the most reliable cool-season greens in South Florida. They handle temperature swings better than many leafy crops and continue producing well into spring. Keep an eye out for cabbage worms or aphids—treat early with BT or neem oil.

Next steps after purchase:

  • Transplant into fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny spot

  • Space 12–18 inches apart for airflow and full leaf expansion

  • Water regularly and mulch to retain moisture

  • Fertilize monthly with a nitrogen-rich organic blend

  • Harvest outer leaves often for continued production

This is a biennial grown as an annual—meaning it completes its leafy, edible cycle in one cool season and can be replanted each fall for a fresh crop.
