DETAILS AND CARE

Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) – 4–5 Inch Pot
Available in Jupiter, FL. at Urban Abundance.

Compact, creamy, and incredibly versatile—Cauliflower is a cool-season garden hero in South Florida. Whether you roast it, rice it, mash it, or turn it into veggie steaks, cauliflower is a kitchen chameleon with gourmet appeal. A member of the Brassicaceae family, cauliflower is a cool-season annual vegetable that thrives from October through March in our subtropical climate.

Sold in a 4–5 inch pot, this cauliflower starter is perfect for raised beds or large containers and is bred for tight heads and reliable harvests.

Sunlight Needs: Full sun—6–8 hours daily supports healthy leaf growth and tight head formation.
Watering Needs: Moderate. Soil should remain consistently moist but never waterlogged.
Soil Requirements: Rich, well-drained soil high in organic matter. Slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.2–7.0).
Growth Habit: Upright, leafy rosette with a dense central head. Typically 18–24 inches tall.
Harvest Timing: Ready to harvest 60–85 days after transplanting. Harvest when heads are compact and white, before they begin to separate.
Cold Tolerance: Excellent. Ideal for South Florida’s cool, dry season.
Special Features:

  • Produces tight, snow-white heads

  • Excellent flavor and texture for roasting, steaming, or raw use

  • Beautiful in edible landscapes or structured garden beds

  • Cool-season staple that pairs well with herbs and flowers

South Florida Notes: Cauliflower does best when planted early in the cool season. Protect young heads from sun with leaf-tying if needed. Watch for aphids and cabbage loopers—treat with neem oil or BT as soon as signs appear. Avoid crowding for optimal airflow and head development.

Next steps after purchase:

  • Transplant into fertile, compost-rich soil in full sun

  • Space 18–24 inches apart

  • Water regularly, keeping soil moist but not soggy

  • Fertilize with an organic vegetable blend every 3–4 weeks

  • Harvest heads when tight, full, and white before they yellow or loosen

This is a cool-season annual—it grows and completes its cycle in one season and is typically replanted each fall for continued harvests.
