DETAILS AND CARE

Calendula (Calendula officinalis) – 4–5 Inch Pot
Available in Jupiter, FL. at Urban Abundance.

Golden, gentle, and gorgeously useful—Calendula, also called Pot Marigold, brings both beauty and benefit to your garden. With vibrant orange or yellow flowers and skin-soothing medicinal properties, this cool-season favorite attracts pollinators, repels pests, and shines in herbal remedies. A member of the Asteraceae family, Calendula is a cool-season annual flowering herb and edible flower, ideal for South Florida’s fall-through-spring growing season.

Sold in a 4–5 inch pot, Calendula is perfect for raised beds, herb spirals, tea gardens, or edible landscapes.

Sunlight Needs: Full sun preferred; tolerates partial shade. Needs 6+ hours of light for best blooms.
Watering Needs: Moderate. Water regularly but avoid soggy soil.
Soil Requirements: Well-draining, compost-enriched soil. Tolerates poor soils. Ideal pH: 6.0–7.5.
Growth Habit: Upright and bushy, growing 12–24 inches tall.
Bloom Period: Fall through early spring in South Florida. Deadheading extends bloom time.
Cold/Heat Tolerance: Loves cool temps and performs best in fall and winter here. Fades in summer heat.
Special Features:

  • Edible petals for salads, teas, and infusions

  • Medicinal uses for skin healing and inflammation

  • Attracts pollinators while repelling aphids and whiteflies

  • Ideal for companion planting with greens and root crops

South Florida Notes: Plant Calendula from October through February for strong bloom cycles. It doesn’t like high humidity or heat, so keep it as a seasonal showstopper. Harvest petals in the morning when oils are strongest.

Next steps after purchase:

  • Transplant into full sun in well-drained soil

  • Space plants 10–12 inches apart

  • Water regularly, keeping foliage dry to avoid mildew

  • Pinch tips when young for bushier plants

  • Deadhead spent blooms to extend flowering and reduce self-seeding

This is a cool-season annual flowering herb—meaning it blooms for one growing season but often reseeds in the right garden conditions.
