DETAILS AND CARE

Beefsteak Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) – 4–5 Inch Pot
Available in Jupiter, FL. at Urban Abundance.

For tomato lovers who believe bigger is better, the Beefsteak Tomato delivers in every bite. Known for its large, juicy fruit and classic tomato flavor, this heirloom favorite belongs to the Solanaceae family and is classified as a warm-season fruiting annual vegetable.

These vigorous growers are a staple in any serious vegetable garden. Offered in a 4–5 inch pot, our Beefsteak Tomato starters are ideal for transplanting into large containers or raised beds, where they’ll thrive with proper care and produce generously throughout the season.

Sunlight Needs: Requires full sun—at least 6–8 hours daily for strong flowering and fruit development.
Watering Needs: Moderate. Water deeply and consistently to keep soil moist but not saturated. Use drip irrigation or water at the base to avoid disease.
Soil Requirements: Rich, well-drained soil with plenty of compost. Slightly acidic pH (around 6.2–6.8) encourages strong root growth and fruiting.
Growth Habit: Indeterminate vine. Grows continuously through the season and needs trellising, staking, or caging for support.
Fruit Timing: Begins producing 75–90 days after transplant. Harvest when tomatoes are full, red, and slightly soft to the touch.
Cold Tolerance: Not cold-tolerant. Grow during South Florida’s cool-season window (October through March).
Special Features:

  • Produces large, slicing tomatoes—perfect for sandwiches and salads

  • High-yielding when supported and fertilized regularly

  • Traditional tomato taste with rich, juicy texture

  • Performs well in raised beds and large containers

South Florida Notes: Beefsteak tomatoes need space, airflow, and regular maintenance to thrive in our climate. Grow during the dry season for best results. Keep the lower leaves pruned to prevent fungal issues and feed regularly with a tomato-specific fertilizer to support heavy fruiting.

Next steps after purchase:

  • Transplant into well-drained, nutrient-rich soil

  • Install cage or trellis at the time of planting

  • Fertilize every 3–4 weeks with a balanced tomato fertilizer

  • Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds

  • Watch for pests like aphids or hornworms and treat promptly

This is a warm-season fruiting annual—meaning it completes its life cycle in a single season and will need to be replanted each year for continued harvests.
