DETAILS AND CARE

Bay Cedar Tree in 7-Gallon Pot available in Jupiter, FL

Salt-spray tough and surprisingly graceful, the Bay Cedar Tree (Suriana maritima) is a South Florida native that's as at home in a seaside dune as it is in an eco-conscious garden. With silvery-green foliage, small yellow flowers, and a dense, rounded shape, it’s a great pick for creating habitat, buffering wind, or stabilizing sandy soil. Loved by native pollinators and practically immune to coastal challenges, Bay Cedar brings both utility and understated charm.

This 7-gallon tree is compact and easy to plant—perfect for hedges, restoration projects, or a native-focused landscape design.

Care & Growing Info (Optimized for South Florida):

  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun—aim for 6–8+ hours daily for best growth and flowering.

  • Watering: Low. Extremely drought-tolerant once established. Ideal for xeriscaping and sandy soils.

  • Soil: Loves sandy, salty, or nutrient-poor soils. Great for oceanfront and dune plantings.

  • Fertilizer: Rarely needed. If desired, feed lightly once a year with a slow-release native plant fertilizer.

  • Growth Habit: Compact, rounded shrub or small tree with soft-textured leaves and small blooms. In a 7-gallon pot, expect 2–3 feet. Can grow to 6–10 feet tall and wide in the ground.

  • Temperature: USDA Zones 10–11. Thrives in heat, wind, and salt spray. Excellent for barrier islands and coastal yards.

  • Maintenance: Very low. Prune to shape or maintain size. Pest- and disease-resistant.

Flower Notes:
Tiny yellow flowers bloom periodically throughout the year and attract native bees and butterflies.

Medicinal & Nutritional Benefits:
Traditionally used in Caribbean and tropical folk medicine as a mild anti-inflammatory and antiseptic. Extracts from leaves have been explored for antibacterial properties, but it is not edible and should be considered ornamental/medicinal only.
