DETAILS AND CARE
Bald Cypress Tree in 25-Gallon Pot available in Jupiter, FL
Statuesque, swamp-loving, and seasonally surprising—the Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) is a Florida native tree that brings timeless beauty and ecological value to the landscape. Known for its towering, straight trunk, feathery foliage, and signature “knees” (root projections), the Bald Cypress thrives in wet soils and adds year-round structure. Despite being a conifer, it’s one of the few that’s deciduous—meaning it drops its needles in winter, revealing elegant branching and russet tones before leafing out fresh in spring.
This 25-gallon size is an excellent young tree, ready for large landscapes, rain gardens, or naturalized spaces.
Care & Growing Info (Optimized for South Florida):
-
Sunlight: Full sun preferred—at least 6 hours daily for optimal growth and form.
-
Watering: High. Tolerates both standing water and regular irrigation. Naturally suited for wet or flood-prone areas.
-
Soil: Adapts to clay, sand, or loam. Prefers acidic, moist soils but grows in a wide range of conditions.
-
Fertilizer: Needs little to no fertilizer when planted in native soils. Optional light feeding once per year in nutrient-poor locations.
-
Growth Habit: Strong vertical trunk with pyramidal shape when young. In a 25-gallon pot, tree is 5–7 feet tall. Mature size reaches 50–70 feet tall, 25 feet wide.
-
Temperature: USDA Zones 4–10. Exceptionally hardy—handles cold, heat, humidity, and hurricane winds with grace.
-
Maintenance: Very low. No pruning needed except to raise canopy or remove lower limbs.
Foliage Notes:
Bright green, fern-like needles emerge in spring and turn golden-bronze before falling in winter. This deciduous habit sets it apart in South Florida, where most trees remain evergreen.
Medicinal & Nutritional Benefits:
While primarily ornamental and ecological, Native Americans used parts of the tree for building, medicine, and canoe-making. It’s not considered edible or medicinal in modern garden use, but it’s a key player in wetland restoration and wildlife support.
