DETAILS AND CARE

Ackee Tree – 25 Gallon Pot available in Jupiter, FL.

The Ackee Tree (Blighia sapida) is a prized tropical fruit tree known for its culinary significance and ornamental appeal. Native to West Africa and widely grown in the Caribbean, especially Jamaica, the ackee is both beautiful and productive. Its striking red fruit opens naturally to reveal soft, creamy arils and glossy black seeds. In South Florida, the ackee tree thrives in the warm climate and offers a unique addition to edible landscapes or specialty gardens.

This 25-gallon ackee tree is well-rooted and ready to establish quickly in your yard or orchard.

Care Instructions for South Florida:

Sunlight Requirements:
Prefers full sun for best growth and fruit production. Plant in an area that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Watering:
Requires moderate watering. Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during establishment and fruiting periods. Avoid prolonged dry spells or overwatering.

Soil Preferences:
Well-drained sandy or loamy soil is ideal. Ackee trees tolerate a range of soil types but prefer slightly acidic to neutral pH. Ensure proper drainage to prevent root issues.

Fertilization:
Feed with a balanced fertilizer high in nitrogen and potassium three times a year—spring, summer, and early fall. Supplement with micronutrients like magnesium and iron to support healthy foliage and fruit development.

Pruning and Maintenance:
Light pruning helps maintain shape and encourages air circulation within the canopy. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches to promote healthy growth.

Pests and Diseases:
Ackee trees are generally pest resistant in South Florida but may occasionally attract aphids or scale insects. Monitor for signs of infestation and treat with neem oil or horticultural soap if needed.

Special Notes:
Important: Only consume the fruit when it is fully ripe and has naturally opened on the tree. Unripe ackee is toxic due to hypoglycin A and should never be harvested before the pods open on their own.

Benefits for South Florida Gardens:

  • Unique and culturally significant edible fruit

  • Heat and humidity tolerant

  • Low-maintenance once established

  • Attractive tropical foliage year-round

  • Suitable for edible landscapes and cultural gardens
